Claim Type Glossary

Placer Claim Gold or minerals in loose alluvial material — creek beds, gravels, benches. The most common type for recreational prospectors. Up to 20 acres per individual under the General Mining Act.
Lode Claim A vein or ledge of mineral-bearing rock in place (hardrock). Used for quartz veins, gold-bearing sulfide zones, and other in-situ deposits. Up to 1,500 ft in length.
Mill Site Claim Non-mineral land used for processing ore from an associated lode or placer claim. Up to 5 acres. Must be non-mineral in character.
Active Claim (Red) A valid mining claim currently held by another person or entity. Filing fees have been paid and maintained. Do not stake on claimed land — this is a federal violation.
Withdrawn Area (Blue) Federal land that has been formally closed to all new mineral entry by the government. This is NOT the same as unclaimed land — withdrawn land cannot be staked regardless of whether claims exist. Reasons include Wilderness, National Monuments, military zones, tribal consultation areas, and Wild & Scenic Rivers.
Open BLM Zone (Gold) Unclaimed BLM land with no active mining claims. You can prospect here under casual use rules (hand tools, small equipment, <5 acres disturbance) without filing a claim. If you find a good spot, consider staking a placer claim to secure exclusive rights.

Filing Costs (2025)

⚠️ Important Reminders

  • This tool assists research — always verify claim status directly with BLM before staking.
  • BLM MLRS data may lag 15–30 days behind actual filed claims. Check county recorder records too.
  • This is not legal advice. Consult a mining attorney for complex situations.
  • Water rights for placer operations are separate from mining claims — check state law.
