Fox Trommel

High-Volume Rotary Classifier

The Fox Trommel — Built for Serious Prospectors

The Fox Trommel is a portable rotary screen drum designed to classify and process large volumes of placer material far faster than manual methods. Material is fed into the rotating drum; smaller particles fall through the screen mesh, while larger rocks are discharged at the end.

The undersize material (containing your gold) drops onto a sluice or catch box below for concentration. With the right setup, a Fox Trommel can process hundreds of pounds of material per hour.

⚡ Why Trommel Over Classifier?

Trommels use rotation to continuously break up clay balls and expose locked-in gold — something a static classifier can't do. If you're working clay-rich gravels, a trommel is a game-changer.

Operating Your Fox Trommel

01

Site Setup

Position the trommel on level, stable ground near a water source. Ensure the discharge end is elevated over your sluice box or collection pan. Secure all legs and check drum rotation before loading material.

02

Water Flow Adjustment

Set water spray nozzles inside the drum to wash material through the screen mesh. Adequate flow keeps material moving and flushes fine gold through. Avoid excessive flow that could carry gold over the sluice riffles.

03

Feed Rate Control

Feed material in controlled shovelfuls. Overloading the drum causes material to roll and not classify properly. A steady, moderate feed rate maximizes efficiency and gold recovery.

04

Monitor Your Sluice

Watch the sluice box below for riffle loading. If riffles are packed with black sand, it's time for a clean-out. Check water levels — too much churning means riffles could be losing fine gold.

05

Regular Clean-Outs

Every few hours, stop the feed and clean out the sluice matting into a 5-gallon bucket. Rinse the drum screen to clear any blinding (plugged holes). Check inside the drum for any lodged gold.

06

Process Concentrates

Take your concentrates bucket to a clean water source and pan down to fine gold. Use a magnet to remove black sand (magnetite), leaving behind your gold. Finish with a snuffer bottle.

Which Method is Right For You?

Method Volume/Hr Clay Breaking Portability Water Needed Cost Best For
Gold Pan Very Low Manual Maximum Minimal $ Sampling, finishing cons
Sluice Box Moderate No High Steady Flow $$ Creek/stream operations
Highbanker Moderate–High Partial Medium Pump Required $$ Areas away from water
Fox Trommel Very High Yes — Excellent Medium Moderate $$$ Clay gravels, bulk sampling
Metal Detector N/A N/A Maximum None $$$ Nugget shooting, dry country

Other Essential Equipment

🥘

Gold Pans

14" or 16" plastic pans in black or green. Deeper riffles for fine gold. Avoid metal pans — plastic shows color better and doesn't rust.

🔲

Classifiers

Mesh classifiers in 1/2", 1/4", and 1/8". Stack them for a tiered pre-classification that speeds up panning and sluicing dramatically.

💉

Snuffer Bottles

Squeeze-tip bottles for sucking fine gold flakes out of your pan without losing them. Every prospector needs several.

🧲

Rare Earth Magnets

Use a strong magnet to remove magnetite (black sand) from your concentrates, leaving behind your gold and other heavies.

🔦

Headlamps & UV Lights

UV lights reveal fluorescent minerals associated with gold deposits. A good headlamp is essential for working in shaded canyon areas.

Geology Maps & GPS

USGS topographic and geology maps combined with a GPS unit help you find productive ground and stay on legal claims.
